🎓 VTU SGPA Calculator (Subject-wise)
Enter each subject's grade and credits — we calculate SGPA, then map to percentage using the official VTU formula.
If you're a B.E. / B.Tech / M.Tech student at Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Karnataka, this calculator is built specifically for you. Unlike generic SGPA calculators, this one: (1) takes subject-level input (which is what your VTU marksheet actually shows), (2) uses the official VTU grade-point mapping, and (3) applies VTU's specific percentage formula (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 — not the generic CBSE × 9.5.
VTU updates its scheme periodically — currently active are the 2018 (CBCS), 2021, and 2022 schemes, with the 2022 scheme being the latest for new admissions. The grading scale is the same across schemes; the differences are mostly in subject structure and credit distribution. The calculator handles all three.
VTU Grading System Explained
VTU follows the standard UGC 10-point Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) with letter grades and corresponding grade points. Here's the official mapping:
| Marks (%) | Letter Grade | Grade Point | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| 90 – 100 | O (Outstanding) | 10 | Distinction |
| 80 – 89 | A+ | 9 | First Class with Distinction |
| 70 – 79 | A | 8 | First Class |
| 60 – 69 | B+ | 7 | First Class |
| 55 – 59 | B | 6 | Second Class |
| 50 – 54 | C | 5 | Second Class |
| 40 – 49 | P (Pass) | 4 | Pass |
| Below 40 | F (Fail) | 0 | Fail / Reappear |
VTU requires you to score a minimum of 40% (P grade, 4 grade points) in each subject and an aggregate of 40% in internal + external assessments combined. Below 40% in any subject results in an F and you'll need to reappear in the supplementary exam.
VTU SGPA & CGPA Formula
Step 1: Calculate SGPA per Semester
For each subject in the semester, multiply the credits by the grade points earned. Sum these products and divide by the total credits for that semester.
Step 2: Calculate CGPA Across Semesters
Multiply each semester's SGPA by that semester's total credits, sum the values across all completed semesters, and divide by the total credits earned across the programme.
Step 3: Convert CGPA to Percentage
VTU's formula subtracts 0.75 from the CGPA before multiplying by 10. So an 8.5 CGPA at VTU equals (8.5 − 0.75) × 10 = 77.5%, not the 80.75% you'd get with the generic CBSE × 9.5 formula.

How to Calculate VTU SGPA Step by Step
- List all subjects in the semester. Get the official subject list from your VTU scheme document or the latest VTU notification. Each subject has a fixed credit value (typically 2, 3, 4, or 5 credits).
- Note your grade in each subject. From your semester marksheet — VTU prints letter grades (O, A+, A, B+, B, C, P, F) for each subject.
- Convert grades to grade points. O = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6, C = 5, P = 4, F = 0. The calculator does this automatically.
- Multiply each subject's credits by its grade points. So a 4-credit subject with grade A (8 points) contributes 4 × 8 = 32 to the numerator.
- Sum the products and the credits. Add all (credit × grade point) values to get the numerator. Add all credit values to get the denominator.
- Divide. SGPA = numerator ÷ denominator. Round to two decimal places.
Worked Example: VTU 5th Semester CSE
| Subject | Credits | Grade | Grade Points | Credits × Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Computer Networks | 4 | A+ | 9 | 36 |
| Software Engineering | 3 | A | 8 | 24 |
| Database Mgmt Systems | 4 | O | 10 | 40 |
| System Software | 3 | B+ | 7 | 21 |
| Cryptography Lab | 2 | A | 8 | 16 |
| Project Phase-I | 2 | O | 10 | 20 |
| Total | 18 | — | — | 157 |
This semester's contribution to the cumulative CGPA: 8.72 × 18 = 156.96. When you finish 8 semesters, sum all such contributions and divide by total credits (typically 165–170 for VTU B.E.) to get your final CGPA.
Differences Between 2018, 2021 & 2022 Schemes
VTU revises its scheme every 3–4 years to align with industry needs and AICTE recommendations. The grading system stays the same — only the subject structure and credit distribution change.
| Aspect | 2018 Scheme (CBCS) | 2021 Scheme | 2022 Scheme |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total credits (B.E.) | ~170 | ~163 | ~160 |
| Internal weightage | 40 marks | 50 marks | 50 marks |
| External weightage | 60 marks | 50 marks | 50 marks |
| Project | Phase I + II (8 cr) | Phase I + II (10 cr) | Phase I + II (10 cr) |
| Mandatory courses | NPTEL/MOOC required | NPTEL + research methodology | Industry internship + AI/ML core |
| Min. % to pass each subject | 40% | 40% | 40% |
| SGPA / CGPA / % formula | Same UGC + VTU | Same UGC + VTU | Same UGC + VTU |
Note: the SGPA/CGPA formulas and percentage conversion are identical across all three schemes. Only the subject mix changes. Your scheme is printed on every semester marksheet and on your VTU registration certificate.
What's a Good CGPA at VTU?
VTU is a competitive university with rigorous grading, especially in core subjects. Here's the realistic landscape:
- 9.0+ CGPA at VTU (= 82.5%+) — Top 5% of the batch. Opens doors to Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Adobe; competitive PSUs (BHEL, NTPC); MS at top US universities.
- 8.0 – 8.9 CGPA (= 72.5% – 81.5%) — Top 15% of the batch. Tier-1 IT companies (TCS Digital, Infosys Power Programmer); MS at solid US universities; GATE-based M.Tech at NITs.
- 7.0 – 7.9 CGPA (= 62.5% – 71.5%) — Average to above-average. TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant routine offers; reasonable foreign admits with strong projects/SOP.
- 6.0 – 6.9 CGPA (= 52.5% – 61.5%) — Borderline for First Class (60% boundary). Off-campus job-hunting; smaller IT services; consider skill-building.
- Below 6.0 CGPA (= below 52.5%) — Tough placement landscape; focus on backlogs, projects, and certifications.
VTU students traditionally do well in placements because companies recognise the rigor of VTU grading — recruiters know that an 8.0 CGPA at VTU is harder to achieve than at many other universities. Don't get discouraged comparing to Anna University or AKTU peers whose nominal CGPAs may be higher under different scaling.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the VTU formula for SGPA?
How do I convert VTU CGPA to percentage?
Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. So 8.0 CGPA = (8.0 − 0.75) × 10 = 72.5%. Always use this on placement forms — never the generic CBSE × 9.5.
